R&L PROJECTS / REFERENCESprint

In order to give you a better idea of our expertise in the fields of project management and special transports we would like to give you some examples.

Relocating the coking plant “Kaiserstuhl” from Dortmund to Qingdao, China

Our task was to disassemble the coking plant (which had been finished only in 1992 and represented the state of the art in Europe) in Dortmund, Germany, and transport it to Qingdao, China. Between March 2003 and December 2004 we moved 150,000 m³ or 50,000 tonnes of cargo, including 60,000 m³ heavy lifts/ODCs (up to 150 tonnes per piece). 4,000 containers were loaded and shipped. In order to coordinate the shipping and monitor the different means and ways of transport Rohde & Liesenfeld established a local project office. By providing quick and flexible transportation we were able to undershoot the planned transport period by about three months.

Relocating the ThyssenKrupp “Westfalenhütte” plant from Dortmund to China

Relocating the Westfalenhütte steel plant – complete with blast furnace, sinter plant, steel rolling mill and continuous caster / converter – from Dortmund, Germany, to Shangang/Haili Port, China, was the largest transport in industrial history. This enormous project involved hauling 260,000 m³ or 160,000 tons, more than 3,000 containers and more than 80 heavy lifts / ODCs (of up to 170 tons per piece). Rohde & Liesenfeld established a consortium with a number of specialised transport companies in order to get a grip on the incredible complexity of the project and identify the shipping details. In the end the project was finished five months before the deadline – and within the limits of the planned budgets.

Construction of a pulp and paper plant in Indonesia

This project was particularly complex in terms of the run-up and follow-up procedures to the actual set-up of the pulp and paper facility (capacity: 1,500 adt/d). More than 300,000 tons of supplies and materials from 250 suppliers from Europe (40%), North America (45%) and Asia (15%) had to be shipped to Indonesia. The maximum heavy lift was 196 tons, the maximum ODC 48 m. Rohde & Liesenfeld organised and managed the entire procedure. The crucial point was bundling the complex upstream supplies from different destinations to create full ship cargoes and to make sure that the supplies arrived in time for the next construction steps.

Construction of a copper mine in Argentina

220,000 m³ had to be moved from all over the world to Bajo de la Alumbrera in Catamarca province, roughly 1,200 km north of Buenos Aires, in order to bring the copper mine equipment to its destination. This was the largest project R&L managed in South America. Despite its enormous complexity and the fact that the non-existent infrastructure had to be created first it was completed smoothly.
