| ABOUT R&L | |
Rohde & Liesenfeld (R&L) is a German-based international transport logistics company. It was founded as an owner-managed company in Hamburg in 1954. R&L offers international sea, air and cross-country logistics, logistics concepts and project management services. The company has gained international reputation for its expertise with large-scale projects for the industrial sector, such as the shipment of ready-to-use chemical facilities and steel plants to China, of the tunnel drill TRUDE to Moscow, of windpower plants to Japan or of copper mines to Latin America R&L´s transport logistics services are bundled in three business segments:
- classic freight business in the general cargo sector > R&L Overseas
- sophisticated, system-based logistics solutions, such as concepts for supply chain management, purchase order management or line item management > R&L Solutions
- transportation planning and realisation of complete industrial projects; this covers customised transportation services for ready-for-use facilities, for example energy plants, mining equipment, pulp & paper mills or steal plants > R&L Projects
“We regard ourselves as a medium-sized alternative to large transport conglomerates. Our strength is the combination of customer-oriented services, flexibility and close relationship management. These typical qualities of medium-sized firms are supplemented by our extensive presence world-wide. Rohde & Liesenfeld is on its way towards becoming one of the top logistics providers in the world,” says Bodo Liesenfeld, CEO of R&L.
In 2002 R&L took an important step in this direction by creating “The Global Alliance” (TGA), a cooperation with the French logistics provider Geodis Overseas Networks S.A. TGA operates a network of 137 branches in 47 countries and has about 2,300 employees world-wide.
The Global Alliance offers major strategic benefits:
- The global network is appropriate for a multinational transport conglomerate.
- Global third-party logistics solutions can be realised.
- Central procuring by the Global Ocean/Air Freight Purchasing Committees (GOPC / GAPC) makes for optimal competitiveness.
Geodis is Rohde & Liesenfeld’s strategic partner in western and southern Europe and parts of Asia (excluding China and Singapore). In turn, Rohde & Liesenfeld acts in Australia, South Africa, South America, the CIS, the Arab countries and Germany for the TGA. Bodo Liesenfeld says: “We have connected our networks. Thus either partner can benefit from the strength of the other. Nevertheless the partners remain entirely separate and financially independent companies.”
